I've only just discovered this list of 50 social media websites collated by Inside CRM (it must have been out for a little while judging by the dates of some of the reader comments). It's a pretty good list, very thorough, and definitely worth checking out.
However, it does beg the question: Okay, I know there are lot of great social media tools that I can leverage for my business - but which ones should I use?
The Inside CRM post leads with the heading '50 Social Sites That Every Business Needs a Presence On'. Interesting theory, but I think if you attempted all of them - even 20 per cent - you'd go absolutely nuts trying to keep track of everything! (I'm being a little facetious - I'm not sure they're suggesting you try all of them!).
Obviously not every social media platform is relevant to every business so there's a bit of work upfront in researching what's going to work best for your company or organisation.
But the sentiment of the story is right. If you're wanting to increase your online presence you need to become involved across a spectrum of social media platforms. This takes time not only in research in the first instance but also in terms of participation.
Experiment.
Dip your toe in the water.
Over a period of time, or maybe even sooner, you will discover what works best for you (personally/professionally) and/or your business.
Develop your portfolio of platforms and then focus on them. Don't forget to integrate your social media presence where possible e.g. incorporate your Twitter stream on your blog, and your blog on your LinkedIn page, and your LinkedIn address (and Del.icio.us bookmarks) on your blog, and your blog on your website and...you get the picture.
Oh, and as difficult as it might be, try not to get too distracted by the next 'new, new thing' (of which there are plenty of options) otherwise you'll go crazy - and you'll burn time and lose enthusiasm and spread yourself way too thinly.
Oh, did I mention you'll go crazy?
